Why Do Teeth Get Crowded And What Can We Do About It Without Taking Teeth Out?

11th November 2020/in Babies and Children, General Information /by Yvonne Poole

Many people think that the reason the teeth get crowded is due to genetics.

‘Oh, I inherited big teeth from my dad and a small jaw from my mum’.

In a very few number of people this can be true, but it is extremely rare. Genetically it is more normal to inherit missing teeth.

The real reason teeth get crowded is a lack of growth. This is caused by the actions of the muscles of the mouth in mouth breathing, tongue thrusting, reverse swallowing and thumb sucking, which are known as incorrect myofunctional habits.

These habits start early and are often associated with allergies or asthma:

  • A child will have a blocked nose
  • Start mouth breathing
  • And then not relearn to breathe through their nose
  • This then changes the development of the airway and the face.
  • Click here to see how this happens

If a child is a mouth breather:

  • Their tongue is unable to rest in the correct position
  • And their mouth will remain open
  • This causes the muscles of their jaws and face to restrict correct forward growth
  • Forcing it backwards and downwards
  • Resulting in narrow jaws and a long underdeveloped face

If these muscles are functioning correctly, with the tongue is in the proper position and the mouth predominantly closed, normal growth will occur giving enough room for the front and back teeth to fit into their correct position.

How do I know if my child has a problem?

Any of these are signs that not all is well in your child’s mouth

  • Are you constantly telling your child to close their mouth?
  • Do they eat noisily with their mouth open?
  • Do they snore or grind their teeth?
  • Have you noticed that their adult teeth are starting to come in crooked?

How can we fix it?

If a child is seen at Appledore whilst they are still growing we can use an appliance called a Myobrace along with a series of exercises to help to retrain their tongue, lip and cheek muscles.

Myobrace children dentist milton keynes

Myobrace are a series of appliances which are generally worn for 1-2 hours a day followed by night wear. The exercises should take up around 10 minutes a day

By correcting their muscles, we can normalise growth.

Their teeth will generally then erupt in the right place, eliminating the need for extractions. Minor rotations of the teeth can then be treated simply.

Why Invisalign for teeth straightening?

10th July 2019/in News /by Yvonne Poole

There are various ways of straightening teeth, and braces are the most popular method.  Over a series of months, constant pressure is applied on your teeth, slowly and in the main painlessly, moving them into the correct position.

Braces have created millions of straight, beaming smiles in children and adults. But traditional braces can be seen as bulky, ugly or uncomfortable, and are generally not something you see many adults wearing. But adults need teeth straightening treatments too – which is why Invisalign was invented.

What Is Invisalign? – The Invisalign system is a new generation of brace. A unique tooth straightening system, designed to help you get straighter teeth without the need for permanent braces.

The treatment uses a custom-made aligner, which is changed roughly every two weeks and worn for between 6 to 12 months, in a similar fashion to a retainer. The Invisalign system is used as an orthodontic treatment to help realign the teeth and jaw, creating a comfortable bite and beautiful smile. Not only can you not see the aligners being worn, but they can also be paired with a whitening gel that leaves your with straighter, whiter teeth that are Hollywood ready. The aligners are unique to each user, since they are made from a mould of your teeth, and have proven very popular with adults and teenagers across the UK as an alternative to ‘train track’ braces.

How Does Invisalign Work? – A traditional brace works by applying constant pressure to your teeth using a series of brackets and wires, gradually encouraging them to move into the right alignment. At its heart Invisalign does the same thing, but with a different method behind it. Instead of brackets and wires, Invisalign works through a series of plastic aligners that gradually shift your teeth into place. Each aligner is manufactured so that the teeth are slightly straighter than the previous tray, making it a very gentle process. Your teeth will typically move up to 0.25mm per aligner, and every two weeks you will receive a new set. Treatments can last between 6 and 12 months, depending on the severity of your misalignment. This constant updating slowly moves your teeth into their ideal positions naturally, without any uncomfortable or unsightly brackets, and without several years’ worth of dental work ahead of you.

Invisalign Vs Traditional Braces – Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign is one of the simplest and most convenient ways to straighten teeth – making it perfect for adults with a busy schedule. In particular, there are three ways Invisalign is an improvement over traditional ‘train track’ braces.

  • Appearance: As the name suggests, the Invisalign aligner is almost completely invisible. It’s make of a clear plastic that is moulded to your teeth, so when being worn you can barely tell you are wearing anything. There are no thick metal brackets and wires taking away from the natural look of your smile.

  • Convenience: Traditional braces are permanently adhered to your teeth and connected with wires, which can make some everyday tasks much more challenging. But with Invisalign, you can remove the aligners when needed, which makes things like brushing your teeth, flossing, eating and drinking (particularly hard or chewy foods) a simple task.

  • Comfort: Anyone who has had traditional braces will tell you that the brackets and wires aren’t the most comfortable things to live with. Your mouth and gums will often get scratched, and this can lead to irritation, cuts and ulcers. Invisalign doesn’t have any sharp edges at all, and lies smoothly against your teeth during wear. It’s a much more comfortable way to straighten your teeth.

Is Invisalign Right For Me? – This one is a tricker to answer, because only your dentist can really tell you. Every patient is unique, and by seeing a dentist or orthodontist you will be able to find out if Invisalign is the right solution for you. In general, Invisalign aligners can correct some of the most common dental problems we see, including:

  • Gapped teeth
  • Mild bite problems (like overbite, underbites, cross bites or open bites)
  • Crowded teeth

If you would like to find out more about Invisalign, or if it could be the right option for you, we’d love to help. All you need to do is get in touch with the team at Appledore today and book your smile consultation.
