Dental Implants FAQs

16th November 2020/in General Information /by Yvonne Poole

One of the most frequent questions we receive here at Appledore tends to be “is there anything I can do about a missing tooth?”

We recognise that having missing teeth, especially ones at the front, can really knock your confidence, as well as affect the way you eat and speak.

Perhaps you’ve had an accident where you lost a tooth or natural decay has meant that you are left with a gap that leaves you feeling self-conscious.

The good news is that our dental implant clinic in Milton Keynes can offer a long-lasting treatment for replacing teeth.

So, what exactly is a dental implant?

To put it simply, a dental implant is a titanium screw, which is placed directly into your jawbone, replacing your missing tooth root. After it’s fitted, the bone surrounding your dental implant will gradually fuse to it, holding the implant firmly in place. A false tooth (a crown or denture) is then fitted to the top of the dental implant giving a natural look to your smile.

Is that an operation that needs to be done in hospital?

Dental Implant treatments can be carried out in the Appledore Dental Clinic in Milton Keynes. They are fitted under local anaesthetic which numbs the mouth, so you shouldn’t feel a thing!

You may require a bone graft if you don’t have enough natural bone to place a dental implant. For small bone grafts, we can often use bone from another part of your mouth or bone products from a bottle. Your implant dentist will advise the best option for you.

Any dental implant or surgical treatment can be provided under sedation with a visiting anaesthetist.

You may require hospital treatment if your dentist recommends a large bone graft.

How much do dental implants cost?

Dental Implants at Appledore Milton Keynes start from £1500, depending on the complexity of the treatment. You will then need to add the cost of the restoration on top of the implant (the crown etc), which start from £1000.

Your dentist will discuss the price of your treatment plan during your initial consultation. Dental implants can be more expensive initially than other solutions for missing teeth, such as dentures and bridges, but they generally offer a better long-term solution.

Appledore offer 0% interest payment plans – contact us today to find out if you would qualify for this!

Am I too old/young to have dental implants?

Dental implants can be suitable for adults of any age.

They aren’t recommended for under 18s as their jaw is still growing and their bone tissue hasn’t fully developed yet.

Are there any reasons why I can’t have a dental implant?

In your initial consultation, you’ll be assessed for your suitability for treatment. Occasionally, dental implants might not be recommended for some patients for medical reasons. For example, if you have previously had radiotherapy in your jaw or if you have diabetes which isn’t under control. If you have severe bone loss or if you have gum disease around any remaining teeth, you would need other treatment prior to having dental implants placed. Implants are not recommended in smokers.

Do Dental Implants hurt?

Dental implants are fitted under local anaesthetic which numbs the mouth, so you shouldn’t feel your dental implant being fitted. We can offer sedation with a visiting sedationist if you are anxious about your treatment. After your surgery, you’ll likely have some pain, bruising and swelling which will probably last around a week. This is normal, and you’ll be able to go to work the day after your procedure. Your pain should ease with over-the-counter painkillers. It’s also possible that the area may bleed; this is nothing to worry about. If the bleeding cannot be stopped with light pressure, contact your dentist as soon as possible.

Can Dental Implants replace my dentures?

Yes. Dentures are a popular solution to replace missing teeth, but people sometimes choose to replace dentures with dental implants because they’re fixed into the jaw and eliminate the need for adhesives.

How long do Dental Implants last?

If you look after them properly, dental implants can last as long as your natural teeth. It’s important to make sure you care for your dental implant properly to get the maximum lifespan out of it and reduce the risk of infection.

If you lost your teeth due to gum disease then you will have to look after your dental implants really well. You can get gum disease around dental implants too. Regular visits to the hygienist for maintenance are essential.

How long does the whole process take?

The time it takes for dental implants to be placed varies from person to person. The average length of time is between three and nine months, but this might be longer depending on your individual needs, and whether you need any preparation work such as extractions or bone grafts.

What is the difference between a dental implant and a bridge?

Dental implants are screwed into your jawbone to hold a new, false tooth in place, whereas bridges use the surrounding teeth as support for a false tooth or teeth. Sometimes, some healthy parts of your natural teeth have to be cut away to support bridges, whereas dental implants do not harm the surrounding teeth.

Are dental implants available on the NHS?

Dental implants are usually only available through private dental care. In very rare circumstances, dental implants may be available on the NHS to replace teeth lost due to mouth cancer or severe accidents.

Why Do Teeth Get Crowded And What Can We Do About It Without Taking Teeth Out?

11th November 2020/in Babies and Children, General Information /by Yvonne Poole

Many people think that the reason the teeth get crowded is due to genetics.

‘Oh, I inherited big teeth from my dad and a small jaw from my mum’.

In a very few number of people this can be true, but it is extremely rare. Genetically it is more normal to inherit missing teeth.

The real reason teeth get crowded is a lack of growth. This is caused by the actions of the muscles of the mouth in mouth breathing, tongue thrusting, reverse swallowing and thumb sucking, which are known as incorrect myofunctional habits.

These habits start early and are often associated with allergies or asthma:

  • A child will have a blocked nose
  • Start mouth breathing
  • And then not relearn to breathe through their nose
  • This then changes the development of the airway and the face.
  • Click here to see how this happens

If a child is a mouth breather:

  • Their tongue is unable to rest in the correct position
  • And their mouth will remain open
  • This causes the muscles of their jaws and face to restrict correct forward growth
  • Forcing it backwards and downwards
  • Resulting in narrow jaws and a long underdeveloped face

If these muscles are functioning correctly, with the tongue is in the proper position and the mouth predominantly closed, normal growth will occur giving enough room for the front and back teeth to fit into their correct position.

How do I know if my child has a problem?

Any of these are signs that not all is well in your child’s mouth

  • Are you constantly telling your child to close their mouth?
  • Do they eat noisily with their mouth open?
  • Do they snore or grind their teeth?
  • Have you noticed that their adult teeth are starting to come in crooked?

How can we fix it?

If a child is seen at Appledore whilst they are still growing we can use an appliance called a Myobrace along with a series of exercises to help to retrain their tongue, lip and cheek muscles.

Myobrace children dentist milton keynes

Myobrace are a series of appliances which are generally worn for 1-2 hours a day followed by night wear. The exercises should take up around 10 minutes a day

By correcting their muscles, we can normalise growth.

Their teeth will generally then erupt in the right place, eliminating the need for extractions. Minor rotations of the teeth can then be treated simply.

How do we get started?

Appledore offer a FREE initial consultation by video link. Dr Teresa will chat with you and your child and will be able to offer advice on the options for treatment.

If you would like a FREE video consultation, just fill in the ‘contact us’ form on our web and we will be in touch.
